Nearly 70 percent of France is subject to water-use restrictions as drought conditions worsen amid successive heatwaves, the government said Monday.

French authorities warn that an “intense” heat wave will peak on Wednesday, and Spain’s will last until Sunday.

The government contends the law is a response to years of consumer complaints. Authorities estimate that about three-quarters of people in France receive at least one unsolicited sales call every week, and many receive more. Parliament approved the law last year.
